It may be awhile before I am able to get to your store, but I would sure appreciate your advice. I wear a 42DD but have not found a comfortable bra. I have had bras professionally fitted, but even so my straps slip off my (round) shoulders throughout the day, ending up on my upper arms. My breast tissue seems to slide around under my arms, gaping out of the sides. I can’t wear underwire bras because the wire usually comes up too high under my arms and hurts. And the resulting shape is anything but flattering. Do I need to get bras altered to fit me? Is there a place that will do that?

    Hi Cindy,
It is hard for us to answer this for you without fitting you ourselves. We do find that many bra stores tend to fit bras in such a way that they are too large in the back (42) and too small in the cup (DD). They do this because they don’t sell a full range of sizes so they don’t have the right size to offer you. We won’t sell you the wrong size. If it is not in stock, we will offer to order it for you. Of course we try to keep everything in stock…

When a bra is too big in the back, some of the problems you have listed happen, in particular straps sliding off your shoulders, because the straps on the bra are set too wide for your body, as the bra is designed for a wider frame. If the cups are the right size, wearing a 40E or 38F (which are both the same cup size as you are wearing now with smaller back measurements) will likely help to solve this problem.
Also, if you feel that your breast tissue is not fully enclosed in the bra and is sneaking out of it under your arms, it is likely your cup size is too small. An underwire should never hurt but it will hurt if not fitted properly. That said, they are not right for everyone and we do have a great selection of wireless bras.

As I’m sure you’d expect from writing this my best suggestion to make for you is to come in for a fitting. We offer a wide range of sizes (28-48, AA-K cups) as well as a great variety of styles. We will help you choose the best style for you and it is extremely rare that we have to suggest an alteration. Before a proper bra fitting the feeling that you have an unusual body type or are ‘not a normal size’ is a very common thing. We hear this all the time. The reality is you have not been offered a complete selection of cuts and sizes and if offered this you will be able to find something that gives you the exact fit, shape and comfort you are seeking. It is important when shopping for a bra, to not get stuck that ‘this is my size’ and just try bras in that size. All manufacturers and styles are different. We can help you sort through all the options and find one right for you. This service is free in our store and we hope you’ll take advantage soon! PS. If needed, we can also recommend someone to do alterations on your bras for you – but we are willing to bet the right size will make this unnecessary.
