Summer Dressing Series: Part 3

Part 3: The Basics

August has just arrived. It is during this later part of the summer that wearing basic bras seems to make the most sense. Early in the season we feel invigorated at the thought of showing off our brightly coloured straps, because they’ve been in hiding all year. As summer wears on, and the heat sets in, we’re interested in challenges such as how to pull off a layered white look. But by the time August rolls around, we’re getting a little tired of figuring out how to make a tank top seem appropriate for all occasions and we’re simply focused on staying comfortable and cool.

So it is the right time to talk about the most important basic you will have in your wardrobe during the warmer months: the nude bra. Some of our customers swear by their neutral bras and wear nothing else. Though this is highly practical option, we’re more inclined to pick out less-than-practical hot pink with heavy embroidery. Because hot pink with heavy embroidery doesn’t really work under sheer or light clothing, we’ve decided to split the difference and highlight two of our prettiest, yet highly functional everyday nude bras. Because they meet so many high standards, they’re also some of our best selling bras of all time.

Nude bras, often called “beige” or “neutral” (though we like “nude” since that can mean anything from midnight to chocolate to cafe latte to light pink) are the best basics. Loads of manufacturers have gotten away from ‘nude’ or ‘beige” as well, preferring shades of Caramel, Coffee or Blush. The point is, it’s not white! White bras will show through and choosing a tone close to your skin tone is your best bet.

Kiera by Goddess is a lovely light pink option for bustier gals:

From Fantasie, there’s Helena, an all time classic at secrets from your sister… available in both balconette and full cup styles in beautiful chocolate brown:

They will hide under the sheerest garment so long as the tone of the bra is close in tone to your skin.  When in doubt it is better to go a shade darker than your skintone. One that is lighter, or worse still, white, will reflect against your skin and show every detail through the garment.

Next up is Empreinte Melody. This bra is available in multi-way straps, which allow it to become a halter or cross backed bra as well. Here it is in the regular and multi-way styles:

At the left we’ve pictured the Multi-way style in black, and at right the full cup in caramel. This lace is sheer and lays flat against the skin. This is considered a seamless tshirt bra – achieved without the thin lining most tshirt bras utilize to achieve the smooth look.  Because they are semi-transparent, they blend easily with a range of skintones. Many customers with darker complexions love this in the black lace as their basic. We love how delicate and feminine this style is, without sacrificing any support or comfort at all.

This range is available in D-G cups.

For the smaller sized gal, Romance by Simone Perele is fabulous! Available in B-E cups, it’s stunning and a great fit.

This plunging lined bra is perfect under virtually anything, but we especially love how it makes us appear nude under sheer tops. The delicate lace detailing along the band make it pretty, but still wearable. The double thin straps add support and comfort, without looking heavy.

When picking a nude bra keep in mind that it won’t just be useful with whites, but will also allow for a more streamlined look under any sheer fabric (like those tshirts that are so popular this summer). Often a nude bra is the best choice under wedding attire (for both the bride and wedding party) as no matter what happens, it won’t show up in pictures.  Nude is the best choice for strapless or convertible bras because these should be viewed as staple investment pieces, and nude will be the most flexible option available in the marketplace.

secrets from your sister… has a wide selection of nude bras in many tones and a huge range of sizes. Ask us to help you find the best basic bra for your body and we’ll find one for you that will be so great, you’ll wonder how you ever did without it.
