Maternity Bras – SweetMama!

December 1st, 2009

December is here, and we are very busy in store. Not only is it the holiday shopping season, it is also the holiday party season – which means we have a lot of new customers coming in looking for strapless or convertable styles.  It is an exciting time of year, because we meet so many new customers, be they newly fit or men in the store for the first time.
Another reason customers come in for their first fitting is pregnancy. A lot of women manage to wrestle their way through their first twenty-to-thirty years of life “getting by” with a bra that doesn’t fit well. These same women experience some serious frustration the first time they go to buy a maternity bra, because they discover they don’t know much about their new size, what the are looking for, and what will be a economical purchasing decision. Well, we’re bra experts, and we are here to help!

Enter SweetMama, the fantastic sister site to SweetSpot! SweetMama approached us to help with a reader question. Check it out below:

Q: I’ve recently become pregnant, and all of a sudden, my breasts have a mind of their own. What should I be looking for in maternity bras? Any brand/product suggestions?

Melissa M. emailed us at expert@sweetspot.ca, and Jennifer Klein, owner of Secrets from your Sister, answered;

Congratulations!

Every woman’s pregnancy is different, so I can’t tell you exactly what changes are going to happen to your body. At this stage, you want a maternity bra that will allow for you to grow a bit more. You need a bra to fit you, but you have to have flexibility with that. This is why we like to start in wireless bras. There are no wires confining you to a certain size. You can change size in the cup and back and not have to buy a new bra. Sometimes this will be a nursing bra, which can be more economical.

  • Make sure the bra can be loosened in the band by at least one hook. This offers space as your belly, ribs and body grow a bit over the months. Any more and the band will ride up and you will not get enough support.
  • The cup should fit well if not a tiny bit deeper (when your breast has been lifted into the cup) so you have freedom to grow. You should try a shirt on to see if the shape is good for you and you should sit down to see if the band is comfortable. I always like to have moms lift their arms forward as well to make sure there is plenty of comfort where the arms meet the body.

Product Suggestions:

  1. Elle MacPherson Smooth Nursing: offers a great rounded, lifted shape. A pretty detail of lace across the top adds a feminine touch, while the sturdy straps give great support. Six rows of hooks in the back mean you can wear this bra before you give birth, grow into it and then tighten the band after birth as your size adjusts.
  2. Freya Dotty: a full support, full separation nursing bra that comes in a fun polka dot print.
  3. Bella Materna Anytime: made with fine italian micro-fibre, this bra will carry you from maternity into nursing. Made by moms who wanted something more, this every day or sleep bra offers light support, easy access for nursing and a silky, sexy, low-cut v-neck shape that won’t show under most clothing.
  4. Bella Materna Smooth: this bra fulfills secrets from your sister’s most frequent request by moms – nipple coverage!  It’s made from extra soft Italian microfibre. This smooth, seamless, extra-comfortable bra offers great shape and support. Plus, the sheer trim adds a sweet touch to an otherwise simple design.

Always too shy to ask?

April 23rd, 2009

I didn’t get my breasts until a bit later in my teens. I always wondered if I was normal, if this was how boobs looked. Mine sure looked different from my moms! Even in my 20’s my breasts would surprise me with new and interesting little details. A blemish here, a hair there…what was a shy girl to think? There was the library then and now we are blessed with the internet. Check out this sight for answers to some of the first questions that come to girls minds when their breasts first start to develop.
